Vietnamese police have initiated criminal proceedings against a teacher who was accused of raping an 11-year-old student in his class.
Police in northern Thai Binh Province’s Tien Hai District have arrested Doan Van Tam, 44, a teacher at Dong Long Elementary and Middle School in the district, on charges of raping a person under 16 years old, a source told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday.
The arrest warrant and prosecution decision against Tam were approved by the procuracy of the same level.
The district police launched an investigation into the case after receiving a denunciation from D.T.X., hailing from Hanoi, on April 29 in which she accused Tam of raping her daughter, 11-year-old N.D.A..
The rape happened around mid-April, VietNamNet cited X. as saying.
Following the allegation, the school management suspended Tam from teaching to facilitate the police’s investigation into the case.
Agencies concerned performed a forensic examination to collect evidence.
X. told Tuoi Tre that some relatives of Tam’s visited her home to apologize and offer remedies for the man’s crime but she did not accept their suggestions.
The woman also said her daughter has shown signs of fear, isolated herself, and limited contact with people around her after being sexually abused.
A.’s parents divorced when the girl was nine months old and she has since lived with her mother in Hanoi.
In March 2020, when A.’s school suspended in-person classes due to the COVID-19 impacts, X. and her daughter moved to Tien Hai District to live with the girl’s grandparents.
A. later attended the aforementioned school and was placed in the class where Tam was the head teacher.
Local police are continuing their probe.
