Seven earthquakes measuring up to 4.1 on the Richter scale hit Kon Plong District, Kon Tum Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands region, on Thursday, the Institute of Geophysics said.
The first quake, measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale, hit at 9:13 am and the last one, which measured 3.4, was reported at 6:36 pm.
The strongest quake, which measured 4.1 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 1:39 pm, with local residents saying they could clearly feel the ground trembling.
The earthquakes did not pose any disaster risk, the Institute of Geophysics said, adding that it was continuing to observe related developments.
Kon Plong District has recently been struck by several quakes, with a total of 12 earthquakes with magnitudes between 2.5 and 4.7 on the Richter scale hitting the area on August 23 and 24.
The magnitude-4.7 quake was the strongest to have hammer Kon Plong District in many years.
Local authorities have issued warnings and instructions to residents on how to respond to and overcome the possible consequences of earthquakes in the area.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has also sent a document to authorities in Kon Tum and nearby Quang Nam Province, often hit by quakes as well, requesting that they closely monitor the situation, as well as inspect and assess the damage caused by the tremors to local houses, reservoirs, hydropower dams, traffic works, and medical and educational facilities.
The premier also requested the Ministry of Science and Technology, in coordination with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, to determine the cause and danger of earthquakes in the locality, as well as to propose suitable solutions.
