The People’s Committee of Da Nang on Friday morning organized a drill to respond to nuclear and radiation accidents, with the simulation being the detection of natural radioactive sources on a ground filling area 10 meters away from a residential area.

According to the simulation, workers in the coastal area in the Ngu Hanh Son District of Da Nang were leveling the ground near a residential area where functional units detected abnormally high radiation levels and evacuated ten households out of the dangerous zone.

After analyzing the gamma-radiation background, which showed a radiation level that was 10 times higher than the surrounding area, the head of Da Nang's Steering Board for Radiation and Nuclear Incident Response rang the alarm bell and prompted a response plan.

During the drill, the organizers set a target to handle the accident in 90 minutes, with the participation of the medical and chemical forces of Military Region 5 in the role of determining the source of radioactive contaminated materials, safe handling and revocation.

Le Duc Vien, director of the municipal Department of Science and Technology, said that the world and the region face increasing radioactive emission risks today.

The purpose of this exercise was to evaluate the coordination and problem response capabilities of the units, particularly the coordination with military units regarding the removal of radioactive sources.

“This exercise focuses on the situational skills necessary for relevant forces to respond to any atypical nuclear and radiation related cases, particularly in densely populated and tourist areas,” Vien stated.
