Heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hail are expected to strike Hanoi and northern Vietnam, on Wednesday afternoon, according to the national weather center.

At 8:45 am on Wednesday, Son Tay Town and Ba Vi District were experiencing medium to heavy rains and thunderstorms.

Some two hours later, more parts of the city were hit by torrential rains and hail.

Many localities in the northern region are forecast to see medium to heavy rains with rainfalls ranging from 10 to 50 millimeters.

Rainfalls measuring over 30 millimeters hit Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Bac Kan, Son La and Tuyen Quang Provinces in the morning.

Heavy rains might cause waterlogging and flooding in many low-lying areas of the northern region.

Rains are forecast to weaken on Thursday. Instead, hot weather will sweep the northern region from April 1 to 3.

Meanwhile, central and southern localities are expected to undergo prolonged heat waves.
