A tourist fell to her death on Saturday, while climbing the stairs of the Tram Huong Tower in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam to take photos.

Police in the province made an announcement on Sunday, stating that the accident occurred at 3:00 pm on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as a 65-year-old resident of Pleiku City in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

She traveled to the beach city of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province with her family.

The female tourist was standing on the fifth stone stair of the tower to take pictures when she slipped and fell down to the April 2 Square, where the tower is situated, and died on the spot.

After being notified of the incident, the police of Nha Trang City were dispatched to the scene to investigate the cause of the fall and rush the victim to Khanh Hoa Province General Hospital for an autopsy. 

The body of the deceased was then handed over to her family.

In September, the Khanh Hoa People’s Committee assigned the provincial Department of Culture and Sports to implement a project to repair and rehabilitate the seaside Tram Huong Tower. 

The project cost some VND11 billion ( US$470,000), sourced from Khanh Hoa Salanganes Nest Company, which was the investor.

The embellished Tram Huong Tower was put into service on the 2023 Lunar New Year holiday, attracting throngs of dwellers and tourists.

The tower features a new porch and a staircase.

Tram Huong Tower was constructed and open to public in 2008.

On the highest floor, there are memorial tablets engraved with the names of more than 12,000 war heroes.

As such, the tower acts as not only a place of worship but also a venue to hold cultural events and art performances.
