Police in Lam Dong Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, have detained and initiated legal proceedings against two men accused of trafficking eight Vietnamese people to Cambodia to work for Chinese companies.
The two are Pham Xuan Thanh, 39, and Doi Quang Luu, 35, both residing in Ward 7, Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province, the provincial police said on Tuesday.
The two were prosecuted on charges of human trafficking.
Thanh worked as a chef in Cambodia between March and April last year. He knew that some Chinese companies there wanted to seek laborers.
He contacted Luu through social media to ask the latter to look for, and introduce him to, jobless, orphaned, and agile people who know how to type. He offered a monthly salary of US$700.
Luu found eight young men residing in Lam Dong and north-central Thanh Hoa Province before taking them to Ho Chi Minh City for passport application and then to Moc Bai International Border Gate in Tay Ninh Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, to complete procedures to reach Cambodia.
Police investigation showed that Thanh smuggled the eight young men to Chinese companies in Cambodia for US$2,000 each.
Thanh paid Luu VND5 million ($214) for each person.
