The Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR), the developer of the metro line No. 1 project in the city, has introduced a set of solutions aimed at enhancing security for railcars at Long Binh Depot in Thu Duc City after they were found to have been vandalized on two separate occasions.

The solutions were developed by contractors involved with the project, including a consortium of Sumitomo Corporation, Civil Engineering Construction Corporation No. 6, and Hitachi, as well as consulting unit NJPT.

In particular, contractors will increase the number of security guards to 27 at the railcar parking facility and arrange more security guards in locations at high risk of burglary.

Contractors will also install an additional 11 security cameras and eight lights. Metro trains will be parked in areas with cameras.

They will add 500 meters of barbed wires around the fence of the Long Binh Depot in order to increase its height to two meters.

The contractors will continue clearing thickets along the fence of the depot.

MAUR and the contractors with coordinate with the Thu Duc police to keep a close watch on those going in and out of the depot.

Vandals sprayed the metro cars with graffiti on April 30 this year and in June 2022.

MAUR also reported the theft of several pieces of equipment at the construction site of some elevated sections of the metro line project.

The Thu Duc police asked the contractors to improve lighting systems and increase security personnel at the elevated stations.

MAUR will continue working with local police to ensure quick response times for similar incidents.

The 19.7-kilometer-long metro line runs from Ben Thanh Market in District 1 to Suoi Tien Theme Park in Thu Duc City.

It has 17 Japanese-manufactured trains measuring 61.5 meters long and capable of carrying 930 passengers.

The metro service, which carries a price tag of VND43.7 trillion (US$1.9 billion), is now some 95 percent complete and has embarked on three test runs.

Construction of the project is expected to be completed this year.
