The construction of the passenger terminal at the Long Thanh International Airport project in Dong Nai Province, neighboring Ho Chi Minh City, will begin in August, Nguyen Tien Viet, deputy general director of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), told a working session with the provincial People’s Committee and other relevant units on Thursday.

In June, the ACV issued a tender invitation for a bidding package for the construction of the terminal and the installation of equipment, a key component of the first phase of the big-ticket airport project, said Viet.

The bidding package is worth VND35 trillion (US$1.5 billion).

The selected contractor will break ground on the passenger terminal subproject in August.

Work on other components of the project, including runways, taxiways, and aprons, will commence in August and September.

Long Thanh District authorities have nearly completed clearing 1,810 hectares of land for phase-one construction and 722 hectares of land as reserve space for the project.

The ACV is also pushing for the district to speed up site clearance for two connection road projects related to the airport.

Speaking at the working session, Vo Tan Duc, vice-chairman of the Dong Nai People’s Committee, urged authorities in Long Thanh District to complete site clearance so that land for at least one of the two roads can be handed over in July.

The Long Thanh International Airport project, located 40 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, will span 5,000 hectares and cost over VND336.6 trillion ($14.2 billion).

Work on the mammoth project will be carried out in three phases.

Following the completion of the first phase, which is estimated to carry a VND114.5 trillion ($4.8 billion) price tag, the airport is designed to accommodate up to 25 million passengers and handle 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually.
