Some 200 police officers in Hanoi besieged and arrested a man who kidnapped a seven-year-old boy on Tuesday morning after 10 hours of tracking him down, returning the boy home unharmed.
The kidnapper was identified as Nguyen Duc Trung, a 31-year-old resident of Vinh Phuc Province, northern Vietnam.
The Hanoi Department of Public Security said on Tuesday that D.T.H., who lives in the Viet Hung urban area in Long Bien District, contacted police in Viet Hung Ward at 7:40 pm on Monday to report her kidnapped child.
The boy was grabbed by a masked man and taken to a car when he was riding on Monday evening.
H. also said that the kidnapper demanded a ransom of VND15 billion (US$627,885).
Some 200 police officers and vehicles were mobilized to hunt for the suspect, based on information provided by Trung about some venues for handing over the ransom.
However, he constantly changed the sites to receive the money.
Besides, he drove a car with fake plate numbers, making it hard for police officers to trace him.
At the Dong Van industrial park in Ha Nam Province, some 60 kilometers from Hanoi, Trung asked the boy’s mother to walk to the site to hand over the money. After checking the amount of the ransom, he freed the boy and drove away.
He was detained at 5:00 am on Tuesday.
When he was besieged, he shot at police officers, injuring Major Nguyen Anh Tuan.
Trung confessed that he got into debt, so he decided to kidnap the boy to get the ransom.
At 7:00 pm on Monday, Trung was driving around the Viet Hung urban area, when he found H.’s son riding a bike. Therefore, he abducted him.
