A woman died and two others were hospitalized after eating pig blood soup in Thai Thuy District under Thai Binh Province, located in northern Vietnam earlier this week.

Pig blood soup, or tiet canh heo in Vietnamese, is a dish made from the raw blood of pigs and topped with peanuts and herbs.

A representative of the Thai Thuy District Healthcare Center told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday night that the district had documented several food poisoning cases which occurred after the consumption of pig blood soup.

The deceased was identified as Bui Thi Nh., a 69-year-old resident of Thai Thuy District’s Thuy Dan Commune.

The raw blood for the soup was sourced from a slaughterhouse in Thuy Dan Commune.

Bui Quoc H., 66, Nh.’s younger brother, on October 8 bought raw pig blood from the slaughterhouse to make blood soup, which was eaten by Nh., H., his wife, and his daughter.

The four developed stomachache, vomiting, and diarrhea the same day.

A day later, three were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, while the other received treatment at home.

Nh. was pronounced dead at the Thai Binh General Hospital due to septic shock suspiciously caused by streptococcus suis, while the two others are receiving treatment at the hospital’s Infectious Diseases Department.

According to the district’s healthcare center, another individual was hospitalized and diagnosed with dyspepsia after using blood sourced from the slaughterhouse.
