Dairy producer Nutifood has proposed spending over VND1 trillion (US$41.1 million) developing a pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River in Ho Chi Minh City.
The company suggested commencing the project on April 30, 2025 and expected to complete it in 2027.
The municipal administration assigned the Department of Transport to negotiate and sign an agreement with the sponsor to receive the funding for the pedestrian bridge.
The two sides expected to sign the agreement on Thursday this week.
The department will make a proposal to the municipal People’s Committee so that the latter can ask for the municipal Party Committee’s approval.
Nutifood would construct the bridge in line with the approved design, while the Department of Transport will coordinate with relevant departments and agencies to instruct the firm to complete procedures and appraise the project.
The footbridge, when in place, will be transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City administration for management and exploitation.
The pedestrian bridge would be located between Ba Son Bridge and Saigon River Tunnel.
One end of the bridge would lead to Bach Dang Wharf Park in District 1 and the other end to the Thu Thiem New Urban Area in Thu Duc City.
The footbridge project was expected to be a highlight of the downtown area, so the city launched a contest in 2019 to choose an architectural design for the structure.
Last month, the city chose an architectural design featuring nipa palm leaf imagery proposed by a consortium of Japanese-invested Chodai - Takashi Niwa Architects and Chodai Kisojiban Vietnam.
With the design of the nipa palm leaf imagery, piers would be built near the riverside to create a high vertical clearance.
The design would allow pedestrians to have a good view, according to the municipal Department of Planning and Architecture.
The fountain in the design matches the design of a central square in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Architecture assessed the design as special, impressive, simple, and attractive to local residents and tourists while its investment is feasible and reasonable.
