An intense cold front is expected to make landfall in northern Vietnam, which has been experiencing a big chill for six consecutive days, on Saturday afternoon and persist through this weekend, according to the national weather center.

North-central provinces like Thanh Hoa could also be hit by the bitterly cold weather, while frosts and sleet are forecast in mountainous areas, the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting warned.

The extreme weather conditions have wreaked havoc on herds of cattle in multiple localities in the region.

Official data collected from northern provinces such as Dien Bien, Son La, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son and the north-central province of Nghe An showed that 270 cattle had been killed due to the brutally cold weather as of Friday, with Lang Son and Cao Bang the hardest hit localities.

As the frigid weather may persist over the next few days, the death rate among livestock could rise further.

By 6:00 am on Saturday, the mercury dipped below 10 degrees Celsius at 23 monitoring stations across the northern region, down between 2 and 3 degrees Celsius against Friday morning.

Temperatures in some mountainous northern provinces including Lang Son, Cao Bang, Ha Giang ranged between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius.

Dwellers in north-central provinces saw temperatures fall to 11-13 degrees Celsius.

The impact of the intense cold front could result in stronger winds in the Gulf of Tonkin and the East Vietnam Sea from Saturday evening, accompanied by waves 1.5-5 meters high and rough seas.
