Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security has been assigned to start collecting biometric information including iris scans, voice samples, and DNA from July 1 for individual identification purposes.

The biometric information will be added to chip-based citizen ID cards.

The prime minister has approved a decision outlining the implementation plan for the amended Law on Citizen Identification.

This law, which was ratified by the National Assembly on November 27, 2023, is set to come into effect on July 1, 2024.

As per the decision, the public security ministry was also tasked with adopting effective methods to step up the collection.

The utilization of iris, DNA, and voice data is required to adhere to the provisions of the law.

The central government has directed the ministry to collaborate with other relevant ministries and departments to integrate the identification data with the national database.

This initiative is aimed at ensuring information security and safeguarding the privacy of personal information.

During a national conference on identification in early February, Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Duy Ngoc highlighted that the effective application of biometric technology, including voice, iris, and DNA patterns, would not only bring advantages to individuals but also contribute to the overall development of the country.

To facilitate the implementation of the law, the decision encompasses activities such as disseminating information to residents regarding identification regulations and conducting training programs for officials involved in ID card management.
