The 2,000km journey of English-language teachers Jake Norris and Sean Down is coming to a close in Ho Chi Minh City after the two spent more than three months walking across the country to raise US$35,000 for underprivileged Vietnamese children.

Norris and Down are set to conclude their journey on Saturday, according to the Australian Embassy in Vietnam.

The two embarked on their journey in December 2023, trekking approximately 2,000km from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City to raise funds for two organizations in support of Vietnamese children, the Thanh Loc Project and the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation.

To date, the campaign has raised over $35,000, with additional fundraising events and increasing corporate sponsorships expected to further boost that figure.

Jake, an Australian native who considers Vietnam his second home, revealed that the inspiration behind their journey stemmed from encounters with children during previous trips, who despite facing adversity, demonstrated remarkable kindness and happiness.

He emphasized that the challenges these children endure are unimaginable, and his initiative is aimed at making a tangible difference.

By traversing Vietnam on foot, Jake and his Irish friend aspire not only to raise funds but also to shed light on the daily struggles faced by these children.

Throughout their 2,000km journey from North to South, they encountered unforgettable experiences, overcoming winding mountain roads and scenic coastal routes.

Despite facing difficulties such as food shortages, weeks of torrential rain, and scorching temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, they persevered, often commencing their daily trek before dawn to avoid the heat.

Despite the challenges, they forged many meaningful connections, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support received from strangers who provided food, drinks, and accommodation along the way.

Jake expressed profound gratitude for the kindness shown by everyone they encountered, affirming that these gestures would forever be etched in their memories.
