As many as 32 households along Thanh Da Canal Embankment in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City face a high risk of landslides due to land subsidence, anticipated heavy rainfall, and high tides.
The People’s Committee of the district said a section of the embankment along Thanh Da Canal showed some cracks up to 20 centimeters in length.
Many houses along the embankment are suffering subsidence and cracking, and are thus at risk of sinking into the river.
Therefore, local authorities have assigned relevant units to evacuate affected people to safer places as soon as possible.
Besides, the Binh Thanh administration worked with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport to ask the municipal People’s Committee for approval of plans to ensure the safety of residents hit by the subsidence and speed up work on the Thanh Da Canal embankment fortification project.

The 478-meter-long embankment project is estimated to cost VND90 billion (US$3.5 million).
Accordingly, 32 households and their property will be relocated to safer places, while local forces will assess the status of the houses in the landslide-prone areas in the initial stage.
The affected residents will be resettled in new locations.
During the next stage, a one-kilometer road along the embankment will be built to connect with Ung Van Khiem Street.
The district had previously evacuated 15 households along the embankment due to severe subsidence.
