Consumers can earn points for use in shopping at GO! supermarkets in Vietnam by putting discarded plastic bottles and cans into recyclable garbage collection machines at these outlets.

Olivier Langlet, CEO of Central Retail in Vietnam, the operator of GO! supermarkets, said on Monday that the group had installed 12 such machines named Sparklomats at its supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring localities.

Consumers have shown enthusiastic support for the program after it was launched half a year ago.

Many clients have brought plastic bottles and cans to the supermarkets to exchange for shopping points.

Trash collection machines are put in easily seen positions, so consumers can access them with ease, thus improving their awareness of recycling.

In the first four months of this year, 65,000 discarded plastic bottles and 14,000 aluminum cans were collected through these machines.

The group’s objective is to not only increase the number of garbage collection machines but also create sustainable change, Langlet noted.

“By sharing the recycling process and encouraging people to engage in the process, we inspire new generations with awareness of living green and protecting the environment," the entrepreneur added.

“The supermarkets’ employees are also encouraged to join the recycling program through garbage collection machines put at their offices.”

Pham Quoc Huy, CEO of VietCyle, which oversees the collection of garbage in the project, said with recyclable garbage collection machines at GO! supermarkets, VietCyle had easily collected garbage.

VietCyle has collected, classified, cleaned, and ground discarded plastic bottles and cans and produced new products.

The process reduces 55 percent of carbon dioxide emissions and 50 percent of energy.

According to Maxim Kaplevich, CEO of Sparklo, the provider of garbage collection machines, the company aims to make recycling easier and more accessible.

The installation of these machines at supermarkets and shopping malls makes recycling become part of consumers’ lives.

Under an agreement between Sparklo and Central Retail, they will install 86 recyclable garbage collection machines nationwide by the end of this year.
