Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday launched a campaign to deal with people forcing others, especially children, to become itinerant beggars in Pham Ngu Lao Ward, District 1.
Under the campaign launched by the police division for administrative management of social order under the Ho Chi Minh City Police and the District 1 Police, vagrants will be sent to social protection centers.
Mai Thi Hong Hoa, vice-chairwoman of the administration in District 1, 1,566 vagrants have been sent to social protection facilities since March 2023.
However, they remain rampant on streets in the southern metropolis, affecting the tourism environment and aesthetics of the city.
Senior Lieutenant Colonel Ho Thi Lanh, vice head of the police division for administrative management of social order, said vagrants often gather in crowded places to ask for money and harass tourists.
The handling of these cases aims to help child and homeless beggars have stable residences while not leaving anyone behind.
The city also wants to deal with those abusing children, the disabled, the elderly, and the homeless to earn money, Lanh added.
The campaign would be carried out in Pham Ngu Lao Ward, District 1 in one month starting Sunday.
The municipal Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs will work out plans to coordinate with other wards and communes to establish working teams to cope with vagrancy.
The municipal police will also launch such campaigns until the end of this year, Lanh informed.
Nguyen Hoang Tam, chairman of the government of Pham Ngu Lao Ward, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that child beggars and other vagrants were plentiful on Bui Vien Walking Street.
Following the local authorities’ act, the issue has been significantly handled.
However, the long-term handling of the issue requires the cooperation of agencies.
Residents who see child beggars and other vagrants in Pham Ngu Lao Ward can call the ward People’s Committee at 028.38.36.7384 or the ward police at 028.38.369.131.
