Police in central Da Nang City recently busted a Da Nang-based group accused of hacking Facebook accounts in order to commit fraud.
Local police announced on Thursday that they had caught the group in a rented apartment in Khue My Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District.
The investigation into the group began shortly after police received reports from victims whose Facebook accounts had been hacked.
Once these accounts were hacked, the group would impersonate the account holder and message their contacts to ask for money transfers.
The police investigation led to the identification of the group of five individuals, all of whom were from Quang Tri and Quang Ngai Provinces but frequently visited Internet cafes in Da Nang.
By Wednesday, after gathering sufficient evidence, the officers conducted simultaneous searches at four locations across Ngu Hanh Son, Son Tra, and Hai Chau Districts.
Initially, the group confessed to have hacked dozens of Facebook accounts from August 2023 to the present.
The group defrauded approximately 400 victims nationwide, stealing over VND1.2 billion (US$48,231).
The criminal police unit of the Da Nang Department of Public Security has issued arrest warrants for two suspects, while the remaining three are on bail, with further legal action pending.
The case is still under investigation.
