Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued an urgent telegram ordering relevant ministries and authorities in coastal provinces to step up action to combat a powerful tropical storm, known internationally as Yagi, as it is forecast to make landfall in the northern and north-central regions in the coming days.
Yagi, the third to impact Vietnam this year, is strengthening and moving fast toward the Gulf of Tonkin.
The powerful storm entered the northeast part of the East Vietnam Sea on Tuesday morning, according to the telegram.
The premier urged relevant ministers and leaders of northern and north-central provinces to remain vigilant in the face of the approaching storm, warning of potential flash floods and heavy downpours.
He emphasized the need for proactive measures to combat the natural disaster.
Urgent actions and concerted rescue efforts are vital to ensure the safety of residents and minimize damage.
Local authorities should take precautions and notify its direction to fishing vessels and passenger ships operating in the waters to avoid the storm and take shelter.
These localities were urged to stay ready to ensure safety for tourism and seafood farming operations, as well as evacuate residents in unsafe areas ahead of Yagi’s landfall.
Besides, these provinces were allowed to proactively issue a ban on vessels and passenger ships from going out to the sea.
As for the mainland, the prime minister directed local authorities to evacuate people from flood- and landslide-prone areas and adopt appropriate measures to reduce damage to residents’ assets, public buildings, and the agricultural industry.
The agriculture minister has been tasked with closely monitoring the storm and coordinating with the environment minister, other relevant ministers, and provincial leaders to ensure the safety of dikes and dams while protecting farm produce.
The ministers of national defense and public security are responsible for mobilizing forces to assist local communities in combating the storm and evacuating residents.
