The number of people dead and missing due to typhoon Yagi, which hammered northern Vietnam on Saturday last week, had climbed to 146 as of 1:00 pm on Tuesday, according to a report from the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Typhoon Yagi was considered the most powerful storm to have battered the East Vietnam Sea over the past three decades.
Eighty-two people were dead and 64 others remain missing in the wake of Yagi, the third storm to hit Vietnam this year.
Cao Bang Province reported 19 deaths and 36 others missing, while 30 people were confirmed dead or missing in Lao Cai Province.
Landslides in Yen Bai Province killed 22 people and left six others missing in the aftermath of the super storm.
Quang Ninh Province announced eight deaths, while rescuers are searching for one swept away by floods.
A steel bridge in Phu Tho Province collapsed on Monday, leaving at least eight people missing, according to a provincial update, in comparison to the initial 10 announced by a senior police office.
Meanwhile, the remaining deaths and missing persons were reported across various northern localities, including Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Hanoi, Hoa Binh, Lang Son, Bac Giang, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, and Lai Chau.
