Vast swathes of Hanoi experienced heavy flooding on Monday evening due to excessive rainfall, causing many motorcyclists to fall onto waterlogged roads or experience mechanical breakdowns.

The downpour began with a vengeance around 5:00 pm and carried the same hostility over the next hour.

Due to peak traffic, the rain made life miserable for those passing through the severely-flooded Thang Long Boulevard section in the outlying district of Hoai Duc.

Roads stretching a dozen kilometers became paralyzed for hours.

Motorcyclists struggled to push their vehicles through the water after encountering engine problems, while several others were thrown off balance by waves and fell onto the road.

Heavy precipitation also flooded Hoa Bang Street in Cau Giay District.

By 6:30 pm, Tran Binh Street in Cau Giay had been submerged in more than 40cm of water. Rainfall also began swamping other streets like Nguyen Khuyen and Bui Xuong Trach.

Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Company deployed all employees and specialized equipment to drain water from flooded streets citywide.

The national weather center announced that Hanoi could see more downpours over the next six hours, with rainfall possibly exceeding 70mm.
