Saigon Waterbus crew members have been applauded for their swift response and bravery after they managed to save a distressed young man who jumped off the Saigon Bridge in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday evening.
The incident took place at 8:15 pm, when some Saigon Waterbus staff members were working at Binh An Station, located in Thu Duc City, a district-level unit of Ho Chi Minh City, they spotted a man jumping off the bridge, which spans over the Saigon River and links Thu Duc with Binh Thanh District.
Immediately, they hopped on a waterbus to approach the man who had drifted to the middle of the river.
A staff member then jumped into the water, securing the man with a lifebuoy and a rope to bring him safely aboard.
The man, aged approximately 28, was in a state of panic and was handed over to local police for further steps.
The waterbus crew received praise for their bravery from many eyewitnesses.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Nguyen Kim Toan, director of Daily Co. Ltd. (Saigon Waterbus), the operator of the waterbus service in the city, expressed pride in his employees, saying that they will be commended their heroic actions.
Toan added that rescue is a core responsibility for those working in the waterway transport sector.
All waterbuses are equipped with life-saving equipment, and staff members are trained to be prepared for emergencies on the water.
He explained that most people who jump off bridges are in a state of distress. After being rescued, they often return to thank their rescuers.
“We aim to offer help and encourage people to pursue a more meaningful life,” Toan said.
