When Vietnamese martial arts actor Tien Hoang’s friends went to see the recently-released Hollywood movie ‘The Marvels’ in theaters last weekend, all he hoped for was that they would pay close attention to a sequence that lasts only a few seconds.

In ‘The Marvels,’ a 2023 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics, Hoang featured in a prominent battle scene alongside over 100 other actors.

Despite its brevity, the scene required a substantial amount of time for practice, makeup preparation, and meticulous filming.

“I was fortunate to have been part of the action team in a small scene in the movie ‘The Marvels’,” Hoang said in a Facebook post after the film premiered in Vietnamese theaters.

“When you visit the theater, keep an eye out for any Vietnamese names in the credits.”

Prior to that, Hoang had a minor role in the 2016 movie ‘Doctor Strange,’ which is also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In ‘Doctor Strange,’ Hoang appeared briefly in a scene at the fictional Kamar-Taj temple, where the main character, Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), observes the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) teaching magic to two students.

In this scene, Hoang portrayed one of the two students.

He disclosed that his luck stemmed from having a friend acquainted with the film’s action director, which paved the way for him to establish connections in other Hollywood productions.

Born in Hanoi in 1993, Hoang’s family relocated to London when he was 11 years old.

Studying Shaolin martial arts in England, he embarked on a career as an action actor, making his debut in the Indian action film ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana.’

Beginning with supporting roles, Hoang gradually secured more parts in Hollywood movies, including ‘Doctor Strange,’ ‘Ready Player One,’ ‘Star Wars: Han Solo,’ ‘The Covenant,’ ‘The Witcher,’ and ‘The Marvels.’

In 2021, he played the lead role in the Vietnamese action film ‘Vo Sinh Dai Chien’ (Battle of the Fists), which unfortunately did not fare well at the box office.

Currently, Hoang continues to seek acting opportunities in international films.
