A pod of 30 dolphins was sighted off Co To Island, administered by Quang Ninh Province in northern Vietnam, on the weekend, an official from the Co To administration said on Monday.

Fishermen have seen several groups of dolphins in the waters in Co To District over the past few days.

While catching cuttlefish on Phai Islet at noon on Saturday, some three kilometers from the beach of Co To Town, a fisherman spotted dozens of dolphins swimming close to his fishing boat.

He quickly used his smartphone to photograph the sea creatures.

Many locals said that a few dolphins occasionally appear and glide through the waters off Co To Island.

However, as many as 30 dolphins have visited the island these days.

In mid-December last year, border guards in Co To District recorded a video showing a pod of dolphins swimming in the waters off the island, some six nautical miles from the beach, while they were patrolling the coast.

Apart from dolphins, whales and sea turtles are also often spotted off the island.

Locals sighted a rare turtle in the waters in August 2022.

The Co To District People’s Committee has banned tourists from utilizing single-use plastic bags on the island since from September 15 last year, with the aim of protecting marine creatures.

Instead, the district encourages locals and visitors to use environment-friendly containers to protect the environment.

The presence of these sea creatures is a testament to the district's commitment to environmental protection and its measures to restrict the use of plastic bags.
