Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau have agreed to boost the two countries’ cooperation across all fields, as they held talks in Quebec on Sunday.

The meeting was convened as part of PM Phuc’s visit to the North American country and attendance at the Group of Seven (G7) Outreach Summit from June 8 to 10.

During their conversation, the two leaders consented to enhance bilateral ties in politics, diplomacy, trade and investment, national defense and security, education and training, science and technology, culture, and sports, as well as exchanges between citizens and localities of the two countries.

Vietnam always wishes to advance the comprehensive partnership with Canada, PM Phuc affirmed.

Replying to his guest, PM Trudeau asserted that Vietnam is one of Canada’s important partners in the Southeast Asian region.

He praised the Southeast Asian country’s role in the international arena and contributions to the G7 Outreach Summit, especially the initiatives to protect the ocean, develop a sustainable fishing sector, and raising coastal communities’ capacity to deal with climate change.

The two prime ministers reached consensus on forging a result-oriented and effective comprehensive partnership, for the interest of the peoples, and for peace, stability, cooperation, and development in Asia-Pacific and the world, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

They agreed to boost cooperation in medical military training, war consequence settlement, anti-terrorism, cyber security, and United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Collaboration in climate change adaptation and clean energy will also be strengthened, whereas favorable conditions will be provided for Vietnamese students to study in Canada, the leaders said.

Both sides will maintain their close coordination at regional and international forums such as the United Nations (UN) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum.

The prime ministers agreed on the necessity to ensure security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Vietnam Sea, and supported the settlement of disputes in the waters via peaceful measures in accordance with international law.

Prior to their talks, PM Phuc greeted the Vietnamese community and members of the Embassy of Vietnam in the country.
