Mozambique wishes to receive Vietnam’s support for its agricultural development while boosting other cooperative areas between the two countries, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said during his talks with Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam on Monday.

The two leader held talks after they had a private meeting on the heels of the official welcome ceremony hosed by Lam for the Mozambican president and his spouse, who had arrived in Hanoi on Sunday for a three-day visit, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the private session, the two leaders pledged to boost the traditional ties between the Communism Party of Vietnam and the Mozambique Liberation Front through theoretical studies, experience exchange, and personnel training, thereby creating a foundation for developing the two nations’ relations, the Vietnam News Agency reported.  

In their following talks, Lam highly appreciated the Mozambican leader’s visit, considering it a new momentum for further promoting the traditional solidarity, cooperation, and friendship between the two countries and peoples. 

Lauding Vietnam's achievements in the agricultural sector, President Nyusi suggested that Vietnam support Mozambique in agricultural development through the implementation of trilateral agricultural cooperation projects like those that the Southeast Asian country has successfully implemented with other African countries.

According to Mozambican Ambassador to Vietnam Ilundi Dos Santos, one of the main goals of President Nyusi's visit is to promote economic relations between the two nations, which have many similarities, from climate to plants.

This trip is also intended to improve the quality of agricultural products and ensure food security for the Mozambican people, as both sides have executed several successful projects, which continue to be highly appreciated by Mozambique’s leaders.

In terms of trade, the Vietnamese and Mozambican leaders concurred in bolstered trade in commodities of the two countries’ strength such as farm produce, apparel, aquatic products, and coal.

The two leaders also agreed to promote negotiations for and signing of cooperation documents in economics, digital transformation, education, training, and other disciplines.

In respect of cooperation between businesses, both sides highlighted the success of Mozambique-based Movitel, a telecom joint venture between Vietnam’s telecom group Viettel and Mozambique’s SPI company, which was set up in 2012 with a total investment of over US$600 million.

President Nyusi expressed his hope that Vietnamese and Mozambican enterprises will engage in effective cooperation models like Movitel in the coming time.

Joint ventures may be set up in Mozambique in other fields such as cashew processing or seafood, he added. 

He and Lam agreed to continue helping the two countries’ key products penetrate each other’s market.

The Mozambican leader praise Vietnam's medical experts, not only for their expertise in medical examination and treatment but also for helping to train Mozambique’s medical staff.

The two leaders agreed to increase exchanges of high-level delegations at all levels through all channels, and to keep closely coordinating and supporting each other at international and regional forums.

With regard to the East Vietnam Sea issue, the leaders shared the importance of maintaining security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the waterway, underscoring their support for peaceful settlement of disputes in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Following the talks, the leaders witnessed the signing of two memoranda of understanding, including one on energy and mineral cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Mozambican Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, along with another between the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Mozambican Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters, and Fisheries.

After his talks with Lam, Nyusi had a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the afternoon of the same day, focusing on measures to boost bilateral ties in multifaceted fields.

PM Chinh called for efforts to boost the exportation Vietnam’s staples, including farm produce, fertilizers, machinery, garments, and footwear, to Mozambique, while strengthening the importation of commodities of Mozambique’s strengths such as coal, cashew nuts and wood.

Agreed with Chinh’s suggestions for promoting cooperation in various areas, Nyusi said he would direct Mozambican agencies to effectively coordinate with their Vietnamese counterparts to expand collaborations in trade, investment, education, health, digital transformation, manufacturing, and processing.
