A section of National Highway No. 51 in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam was submerged following a heavy rain on Tuesday evening, causing traffic delays for multiple hours.

The downpour started lashing Bien Hoa City, the capital of Dong Nai, at around 4:00 pm on Tuesday, inundating such streets as Dong Khoi, Bui Van Hoa, Vo Nguyen Giap, Chau Van Long, Nguyen Van To, and National Highway No. 51.

As of 7:00 pm, the flooding was exacerbated when water from the Ba Lua River flowed into the residential area in Long Binh Tan Ward.

Along a one-kilometer section of National Highway No. 51 in Long Binh Tan Ward, rainwater was about 40 centimeters to one meter high.

Thousands of vehicles were unable to travel through this section, resulting in traffic congestion along multiple kilometers of the highway.

Commuters who decided to continue on with their journey ended up having their vehicles break down.

Residents living along the road could not prevent their homes from being flooded despite having taken various measures, including raising the floor of the house, using a pump, and blocking the entrance.

The water only started to recede at around 10:00 pm, and traffic on the highway eventually returned to normal.

Residents in Long Binh Tan Ward said they had been struggling with similar flooding whenever it rained heavily in the area.

The flooding damaged a lot of furniture and household appliances.

“Local authorities previously installed new sewers and dug ditches, but such solutions did not mitigate the inundation at all,” said Vu Thi Xuan Trang, 52.

Trang expressed her wish that the authorities will soon complete an anti-flooding project to free residents from this misery.
