The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) will propose developing the T2 terminal with a capacity of six million passengers per year at Phu Quoc International Airport off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam to increase the airport’s annual capacity to 10 million passengers.

In a report on the ability to allocate capital to the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport sent to the Ministry of Transport, the ACV said that the airport currently has a 3,000-meter-long and 45-meter-wide runway and an apron with 14 aircraft parking spots.

The current terminal was put into use in 2012 with an initial capacity of 2.65 million passengers per year.

It was expanded to be able to handle four million passengers per year in 2018.

However, the airport welcomed more than 5.5 million passengers with 90-100 flights per day last year.

The number of passengers is expected to surge to seven million per year by 2025.

Thus, Phu Quoc International Airport has posted strong growth, exceeding its designed capacity and overwhelming the apron and passenger terminal.

As a result, the upgrade of the airport is vital to meet the transport demand in the future and improve service quality.

The ACV has drawn up a mid-term investment plan for the 2021-25 period, including the construction and upgrade of facilities at Phu Quoc International Airport, and submitted it to the Commission for the Management of State Capital at Enterprises.

After the Ministry of Transport adjusts the planning for the airport in the 2021-30 period with a vision to 2050, the ACV will propose developing the T2 passenger terminal and upgrading the apron, said ACV leaders.

Under the revised planning for Phu Quoc International Airport in the 2021-30 period with a vision to 2050 prepared by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Phu Quoc International Airport will have a capacity of 10 million passengers and 25,000 metric tons of goods per year by 2030.

The respective figures will be 18 million and 50,000 metric tons per year by 2050.

To reach a capacity of 10 million passengers per year, it is necessary to expand the runway and apron as well as construct the T2 passenger terminal at the airport.

The terminal will be later expanded so that the airport will have a total capacity of 18-20 million passengers per year by 2050.

The People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province has recently written to the prime minister and relevant ministries suggesting early upgrading Phu Quoc International Airport, with a priority for the development of the second runway and terminal by 2025, to ensure the safe and effective operation of the airport.
