Japanese geologists have arrived in Da Lat City, a major tourist hub in Lam Dong Province of Vietnam’s Central Highlands, to conduct geological surveys and help the city fight landslides.

A group of three geologists from Japan’s Kawasaki Company came to Da Lat on Tuesday at the invitation of the municipal administration.

These geological engineers have surveyed some landslide-prone areas of the city.

The group also carried out a survey of a landslide site on Hoang Hoa Tham and Yen The Streets in Ward 10.

The landslide, triggered by torrential rains, occurred in late June, claiming the lives of two construction workers and destroying several houses. 

The fatal landslide sparked concerns among residents and authorities.

The city witnessed two serious landslides, with one on Khe Sanh Street in 2021 and the other in the Hoa Binh area in 2017.

Nguyen Van Son, vice-chairman of the Da Lat People’s Committee, said that after completing surveys and listing landslide-prone sites, the group of Japanese experts will work with the Da Lat administration to put forward solutions to the fight against landslides in the city.

The administration will ask for scientific opinions and suggestions to adjust criteria on building to minimize landslides.

It ordered relevant units to dismantle the remaining 15 meters of the embankment that saw a section give way after heavy rains, killing two people.
