The quality of tap water supplied by Vietnamese water treatment facilities is on a par with that of many Asian and European nations, making it safe to drink directly, Nguyen Ngoc Diep, chairman of the Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association (VWSA), claimed at a press conference on Thursday.
Despite its high quality, Diep does not recommend drinking Vietnam’s water from the tap.
He explained that comprehensive investments in treatment facilities and distribution networks enable people to drink directly from the tap in many countries.
In Vietnam, however, the installation of water pipes in residential areas is asynchronous and takes place over multiple phases, meaning the availability of clean tap water cannot be guaranteed.
In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, old water pipe networks often coexist with new water pipelines, creating quality control issues.
“However, with our current investments in new urban areas, coupled with the synchronized development of clean water pipelines, we aim to ensure uniform water quality from the treatment facility to residential taps, allowing people to consume water directly from the tap,” the chairman said.
The VWSA held the press conference in Hanoi to unveil plans for the organization of ‘Vietnam Water Week 2023’ from September 28 to 30 in Binh Duong Province, just outside Ho Chi Minh City, with informational assistance from the Ministry of Construction and relevant government departments and agencies.
