Two students drowned off a beach in Thua Thien Hue Province, central Vietnam on Sunday evening after they joined six others for sea bathing in the area, a local border guard station confirmed the same day.
Earlier on the day, these nine ninth graders from Lam Mong Quang Middle School, located in Vinh My Commune, Phu Loc District, went to a beach in the district’s Giang Hai commune.
A while later, Nguyen Huynh Phuc T., 15, and Nguyen Van H., 14, drowned and went missing, according to the Vinh Hien border guard station, under the Thua Thien Hue Border Guard Command.
The border guard force and local residents jointly searched for the two drowning students but strong waves made the search and rescue operation challenging.
They recovered the body of Nguyen Van H. in the same evening, while that of the other victim was found some 50 meters off the coast on Monday morning.
The beach where the drowning incident took place is a popular destination among local beach-goers.
Representatives from the provincial education authority will visit and offer support to the bereaved families, said Nguyen Tan, head of the provincial Department of Education and Training.
The department will also ask its sub-departments and heads of local schools to intensify water safety education for students, especially in the rough sea season.
