Doctors at Can Tho General Hospital in the namesake southern Vietnamese city have successfully removed a four-kilogram abdominal tumor from a 75-year-old woman.
The patient, Nguyen Thi S., a resident of Co Do District in Can Tho, was hospitalized as she was experiencing stomach discomfort and fatigue.
According to a family member, the stomachache was chronic and she also had difficulty eating and drinking.
The family had earlier taken S. to a medical center for a check-up and detected a tumor, but she declined treatment for fear of a surgery.
After about a year, the tumor developed and caused her stomach to swell. It also encroached on blood vessels and internal organs, causing digestive and lifestyle issues.
At the Can Tho General Hospital, a CT scan was administered which showed that the tumor had filled her abdomen and was pushing against several organs.
Following a consultation, doctors decided to perform a surgery to remove the tumor.
The patient’s health has since improved and she is under close monitoring after the two-hour surgical operation.
Doctor Tong Hai Duong from the Can Tho General Hospital said the tumor was extremely large and, without the immediate surgical operation, it would have continued putting pressure on other organs and hindering the patient’s ability to eat or drink.
He advised residents with abnormal symptoms or tumors to seek prompt treatment.
