Police officers in Da Nang City, central Vietnam said on Friday that they have cracked down on a prostitution ring operated on the messaging service Telegram and nabbed two men for allegedly brokering such sex services.

The suspects include Nguyen Dang Khoa, a 35-year-old native of Da Nang, and Tran Quang Viet, aged 31, hailing from the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

Findings from police officers showed that Khoa led the Telegram-based prostitution ring and Viet served as the former’s accomplice.

The duo created many pages and groups on Telegram to find female sex workers, post photos of the prostitutes to promote their service, which is illegal in Vietnam, and interact with potential clients.

On Thursday evening, dozens of policemen were deployed to clamp down on the racket.

The officers caught a couple engaging in a sexual act at a hotel on Duong Dinh Nghe Street in Son Tra District, Da Nang.

The authorities apprehended Khoa and Viet during a state of emergency, seizing approximately 200 pages of documents and data associated with the facilitation of prostitution brokerage.

Khoa confessed that he had created many Telegram pages and groups to operate the prostitution brokerage racket since June 2021.

He also hired Viet to take charge of the ring.

They disclosed that they utilized their Telegram accounts to entice female sex workers into the network and advertise their services on the messaging platform daily.

The rates for these services ranged from VND500,000 (US$20) to VND5 million ($202) per sex session.

Khoa rented hotel rooms on Duong Dinh Nghe Street to house prostitutes coming from other localities in the country in order to run the sex racket more conveniently.

The law enforcement forces also unearthed more than 15,000 people joining a Telegram group in the racket, with over 30 female sex workers.
