Hundreds of metric tons of garbage from a waste treatment plant in Da Lat City, located in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, have unexpectedly poured into local coffee gardens.

On Wednesday, the People’s Committee of Xuan Truong Commune in Da Lat City said it had worked with the Xuan Truong Solid Waste Treatment Plant to discuss solutions for the problem.

Local authorities told the enterprise to clean up the scene and move all the waste to its storage zone.

Initial records show that hundreds of metric tons of solid waste from the plant’s storage area located on a high hill fell down suddenly.

The landslide affected an area about 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, with soil cascading down the hill like a waterfall, burying coffee plantations and a small stream below.

Several large pine trees were uprooted and now lie among the damaged coffee gardens.

Filthy water from the landfill has leaked into the stream at the foot of the hill, causing significant pollution.

On Wednesday morning, the Xuan Truong Solid Waste Treatment Plant deployed three excavators to clear the waste from the affected area.

This effort was made to prevent additional waste from sliding into nearby gardens, protecting local crops from further damage.

The Xuan Truong Commune People’s Committee has pledged to conduct inspections and compensate residents for agricultural losses within the same day.

They are also constructing a wall system to prevent garbage landslides.

The waste treatment plant, invested in by Green Energy Company Limited, covers an area of 28 hectares in Xuan Truong Commune and has been in operation since 2015.

It currently processes all of Da Lat City’s waste.

However, the plant has frequently caused environmental problems, leading to public frustration.

Ton Nu Thi Ngoc, a resident of Xuan Truong Commune, expressed growing concern among locals living near the landfill.

She explained that they are increasingly worried about the possibility of garbage landslides, particularly during the rainy season.

With large mounds of garbage and rocks situated at the top of the hill, residents fear that a collapse could potentially bury their gardens and surrounding areas, threatening their livelihoods.

As a result, they are seeking compensation or assistance in clearing the land so they can relocate and continue their agricultural activities elsewhere with peace of mind.
