Vietnam’s number 1 chess player Le Quang Liem has finished sixth at the 2012 Fujairah international chess tournament despite victory over a Ukrainian rival at the event’s last round on Thursday. Liem, with Elo rating 2707, defeated Fedorchuk Sergey A and settled his final result with 6 points after 9 matches of the event in the United Arab Emirates. The result just fell short of expectation for the second seed of the event. The Vietnamese international grandmaster had two unwanted losses, and was eventually kicked out of the race to win the championship after the defeat at the 8th round to Indian player Chanda Sandiphan, whose Elo rating is far lower than his – 2569. His coach Lam Minh Chau however said the result is acceptable as Liem still managed to ensure the number of international tournaments he has to attend, and his Elo rating remains unchanged. The 21-year-old will take a rest for a few days before leaving for India to participate in the Kolkata Open that takes place from December 1 to 12 as the reigning champion.
