The seabed near Phu Quoc island city, off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam, which boasts myriad beautiful coral reefs, has become a distinctive location where many couples, including foreigners, choose to exchange engagement rings, according to a local tourist boat operator.

Nguyen Ha Trieu, operations director at Nautilus, a cruise ship service provider, in An Thoi Ward of Phu Quoc City, said seabed walking tours in Phu Quoc have become an attractive tourism product for travelers at home and abroad to experience unforgettable underwater moments.

Recently, two young foreign guests, who preferred to stay anonymous, came here for a seabed walking tour and they then came up with the unique idea of giving an engagement ring during their undersea excursion to mark their beautiful memories.

Trieu said that Phu Quoc's sea is clear and blue, with schools of fish swimming freely among numerous beautiful, colorful corals. In such a picturesque setting, many couples were deeply moved and overwhelmed with emotions.

"The case of the aforementioned foreign couple is the latest among many young couples who have previously enjoyed their proposal rituals under the sea," the director said.

Proposals on the ocean floor require a meticulous process, so the event organizer must arrange and conduct them thoughtfully to ensure a private space for the couple.

For instance, the organizer gestured for the man of the couple to begin presenting his engagement ring to his partner and later signaled both of them to pose for photos, among other steps in the seabed proposal process.

To enhance the romantic and memorable atmosphere of the proposal ceremony, the couple at the undersea event was treated to a 'balloon dance' performed by the organizer's staff.

According to the Kien Giang Department of Tourism, Phu Quoc, also known as a ‘pearl island,’ has long been an ideal destination for domestic and foreign tourists. 

In particular, many Indian billionaire couples have selected Phu Quoc as the venue for their luxury weddings, the department said.

So far this year, Kien Giang has welcomed over 4.4 million visitors, including more than 442,000 international travelers, earning a total revenue of VND11,428 billion (US$449.7 million).
