Politics

- Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh on Friday afternoon (in local time) attended several important sessions of the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s 2015 Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Society

- The Cuu Long Corporation for Investment, Development, and Project Management of Transportation Infrastructure has announced that the relevant agencies have assigned the group with constructing the 54-kilometer Trung Luong- My Thuan Expressway in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang in the form of Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT.) The first phase of the project costs an estimated VND14 trillion (US$652.44 million) and is expected to kick start next month.

- A coach carrying 13 passengers of two same extended families who were about to attend a wedding crashed into a truck as the coach driver was reportedly losing control on a section of Ho Chi Minh Trail in the northern province of Thanh Hoa. The head-on collision killed nine: seven passengers, the coach driver and coach owner.

Business

- Apart from three major flower markets in Ho Chi Minh City, the local People’s Committee has given their nod to the organization of 125 others in 20 districts to celebrate the upcoming Tet (traditional Lunar New Year.)

- Hai Phong City’s People’s Committee in northern Vietnam and the Airports Corporation of Vietnam on Saturday kicked off construction work on the passenger terminal of the city’s Cat Bi International Airport. The project is expected to cost VND1.5 trillion ($69.9 million.)

- Average food, vegetables, regional specialties and exorbitant food have made their way to Tet gift packages, adding life to the market intended for the upcoming Tet, which begins on February 19.

- A photo exhibition, the first in Vietnam to feature wild birds, is running in HCMC until Wednesday next week.

Sports

- Local soccer clubs and fan associations are upbeat about the sharp rise in sales from jerseys worn by players during the Toyota V-League 1 2015 matches. Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG Academy, which attracted the biggest crowds to stadiums in the first round of Vietnam's top-flight league, has pocketed around VND200 million ($9,321) by selling over 1,000 jerseys of their favorite under-19 players.
