Politics -- Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security looks to consolidate cooperation with Australian law enforcement agencies in ensuring national security and social safety, visiting Minister To Lam said during talks with Peter Dutton, Australian Minister of Immigration and Border Protection, on Monday. -- Vietnam treasures its important, all-round ties with the United Arab Emirates, Chairwoman of the lawmaking National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan said at a meeting with UAE Minister of State for Tolerance Sheikha Lubna Khalid Al Qasimi in Abu Dhabi on Monday. -- Vietnam's foreign ministry issued a statement on Monday to adamantly oppose the Chinese Navy’s marking of the so-called 70 years of recovering Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands in the East Vietnam Sea on December 8.Society -- A warehouse storing chemicals used in crime scene investigation caught fire and exploded at the provincial police headquarters of the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak on Monday night, killing two people and injuring two others. -- Ho Chi Minh City will hold fireworks displays to celebrate both the New Year and Lunar New Year holidays, the municipal administration announced on Monday. -- Southern Vietnamese provinces continued to see rainfall even when the tropical depression that formed near Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago last week lost its strength late Monday.

-- All eight identified members of a gang terrorizing bus passengers traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to the southern province of Dong Nai and other neighboring areas had fled when Dong Nai police started to investigate the case and hunt for them, officers admitted on Monday.


-- The administration of the southern province of Long An on Monday rejected allegations that local dragon fruit farmers are selling the plant’s leaves, instead of fruits, to Chinese traders.


-- Authorities in the southern province of Vinh Long have permitted a local tourism area to offer ‘artistic’ cockfighting shows to entertain tourists, raising concerns that they will result in illegal gambling and betting.


-- Team Vietnam finished first at the Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championship, which ran from December 9 to 11 in Thailand, with 39 gold medals and 14 new records, the Vietnam Aquatic Sports Association announced on Monday.
