South Korean police announced on Thursday that they had arrested a 19-year-old Vietnamese woman for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby in a shopping mall.
At 5:00 pm on Wednesday, the crying baby girl was found inside a black bag left in a restroom of the shopping mall in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, Korea Times reported.
The baby was in good health and still had her umbilical cord attached.
She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical care.
Using security camera footage from the mall and surrounding areas, police identified and apprehended the 19-year-old Vietnamese woman at her residence in Uijeongbu.
She is a university student in South Korea on a language training visa, not a work visa.
The cause of the woman’s act remains unknown and police plan to investigate it with the support of an interpreter, according to The Korea Herald.
The newspaper cited a Ministry of Health and Welfare report in August as saying that nearly 100 children are abandoned by their legal guardians each year.
South Korea’s National Police Agency reported in 2023 that 1,185 babies were deserted in the country between 2013 and 2022.
