Law enforcement forces in Binh Thuan Province, south-central Vietnam have uncovered 533 drug-related cases, arrested 957 suspects, and seized a significant amount of illegal substances so far this year, according to a statement given at a teleconference hosted by the provincial Department of Public Security on Wednesday.
The conference was held for participants to discuss solutions for monitoring, identifying, and managing drug addicts, illegal drug users, and those in post-rehabilitation supervision.
According to the department, Binh Thuan has made strides in combating drug-related crimes, but the volume of drugs entering the province has risen and trafficking methods have become increasingly sophisticated.
Despite ongoing efforts, the actual numbers of drug addicts and illegal drug users in the community remain significantly higher than recorded figures, with many cases going unreported or unmanaged, posing threats to public safety and order.
Data released by the police agency also revealed that 228,215 individuals are currently under official supervision for drug use, addiction, or post-rehabilitation across Vietnam.
Drug addicts and illegal drug users nationwide spend an estimated VND15 trillion (US$590.2 million) on narcotics each year.
Speaking at the event, Colonel Le Quang Nhan, director of the police department, highlighted the complexity of drug-related crimes nationwide and in Binh Thuan.
To curb the supply and demand for illicit drugs, he called for a large-scale campaign to identify and manage drug addicts and users comprehensively.
He also insisted on dismantling trafficking networks and hotspots to ensure public safety.
